Stone carvings are practiced in Tamilnadu from immemorial and this art form flourished from the period of Pallava dynasty, during 6th century A.D. Stone carvings are carved in different variety of stones such as granite, soap stone, green stone, sand stone and serpentine stone.

All the rock cut cave carvings at Mamallapuram and temple pillars are carved of granite stones.

Granite stone is used to carve, the motifs such as Ganesha, Perumal, Sridevi, Bhudevi, Murugar, Valli , Deivaanai, Krishnar, Ramar Set, Navagraha set, Iyappan, Lakshmi, Amman and other village deities..
